Sipo
Sipo wood, with the scientific name Entandrophragma utile, is known for its durability and versatility. It originates from West Africa, in countries such as Ivory Coast, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Cameroon and from Central Africa, in countries such as the Republic of Congo, Gabon or Equatorial Guinea, particularly in the continental region.
Sipo wood is not currently listed in the Appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). However, the preservation of Sipo forests is not only important to ensure the continued availability of this valuable timber, but also to protect biodiversity, mitigate climate change and maintain the environmental services that these ecosystems provide locally and globally.
Sipo is characterized by its light pinkish-brown to reddish-brown colour, with dark streaks giving it a distinctive appearance.
It is a wood valued for its resistance to insect and fungal attack, making it ideal for the manufacture of some parts of stringed musical instruments, thanks to its acoustic qualities, strength and dimensional stability.
At Tonewoods, SL the Sipo (Entandrophragma utile) we sell comes from FSC forest concessions in the Republic of Congo. These long-term concessions guarantee us a stable and constant supply for years, with transparency of traceability and selective logging, helping to preserve the forests. This species can reach between 30 and 60 meters in height, a diameter of between 0.6 and 1.20 meters and has a density of 600 kg.
The natural characteristics of the Sipo make it a highly prized wood for the construction of our tonal products such as backs and sides, necks and heels.
These are just a few examples of the many products that can be made using Sipo wood. Its versatility, strength and aesthetic appeal make it a popular choice in a variety of industries.
