Mahogany is a valuable type of wood, prized for its beauty and durability. It belongs to the Meliaceae family, its scientific name is Swietenia macrophylla. It is known for its reddish colour, which tends to darken with age, this wood presents an optical phenomenon known as chatoyancy, which manifests itself in curls and quilts. It is one of the most valued species in the world and comes mainly from Central and South America. Genuine mahogany has become increasingly scarce due to deforestation and over-exploitation, which has led to trade restrictions, being included in CITES Appendix II, which implies regulated trade, to avoid unsustainable or illegal exploitation of this species.

Mahogany has historically been used in the production of high quality furniture, musical instruments, luxury interior finishes and fine handicrafts.

At Tonewoods, SL, the mahogany we sell comes from FSC forest concessions in Guatemala and Brazil.

These long-term concessions guarantee us a stable and constant supply for years, with transparency of traceability and selective logging, helping to preserve the forests. Its scientific name is Swietenia macrophylla.

It can reach a height of 35 to 50 metres, with a diameter of between 0.60 and 1m.

Mahogany has an average density of 550 kg, it is classified as durable against fungi and with good resistance to insects, and is in great demand for the production of our tonal products such as necks, backs and sides, as well as electric guitar bodies, among others, improving its acoustic properties. It is important not to confuse it with another wood known as African mahogany, with the scientific name khaya, with different subspecies, also belonging to the Meliaceae family, and also included in Appendix II of CITES.

At Tonewoods, S.L. we offer a selection of our mahogany wood for wall paneling, as well as for parquet.

Within our range, you can also find products suitable for the furniture sector and interior design.
